Welcome to the world of Erik Merkow Photography! My passion for photography was discovered at the age of 13 when my dad gave me a Canon AE1 for my birthday. I vividly remember going out and exploring my surroundings in Santa Monica. The pier is where you would’ve found me capturing the laid back vibes and mesmerizing beauty of the beach city. Growing up in California with all the eclectic landscapes, textures and cultures allowed me the opportunity to explore and develop my eye and passion for photography. In my teens, I picked up an obsession for lightning in Palm Springs. The storms created an intense, unique show that provided me a canvas to freeze Mother Nature’s incredible artistry! My journey and love for taking pictures carried through Jr High and High School. This allowed me the experience of shooting for the State Press while attending the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism at ASU. To this day, I can still smell the chemicals of the State Press darkroom!
After college, the real world got ahold of me when I got married and had two amazing kids (which of course my photography passions were always in play). Around 2005, I was introduced to the world of DSLR photography and the wedding industry. Needless to say, I was hooked and honored to be voted one of the Top 10 Wedding Photographers in Phoenix by The Knot readers 2 years in a row. My wedding portfolio consists of close to 200 weddings.
I am a father, friend, brother, uncle, great uncle, son, runner, explorer, and my passion for photography resonates in every one of those areas. As you can see below, I’m constantly taking pictures and my love of photography is always at the forefront. The one thing my friends and family can always count on…I will be capturing the moments of life. My focus remains on catching the beauty of families, weddings, storms and landscapes. However, going forward I plan on driving my fashion and editorial work to completely new levels, continuing a journey to become one of the best photographers in the industry!
